What size of bedspread should I choose?

It is the bed that most often determines the character of your bedroom, and its decoration gives style and ambience to the interior. We can ensure the aesthetic look of the bed by choosing the appropriate bedspread. It should fit into the interior, be of good quality and come in the right size.

The bedspread on the bed comprises both an aesthetic and practical element. It saves time on bed making, by concealing the bedding. However, to fulfil its primary function, it must be of the right size.

Before we proceed to purchase, we must know: the width and length of the entire piece of furniture and mattress, the height of the mattress and bed (making allowance for space taken up by the duvet and pillows), and also pay attention to whether our bed has a headboard and footboard.

Furthermore, the choice of bedspread dimensions should also depend on how we intend to cover the bed:

  • top cover, when the bedspread hangs from the bed.
  • rolled up, where the bedspread is tucked under the mattress.

1. Where the bedspread hangs from the bed:

In this case, when selecting the size of the bedspread, the important factor is the width and length of the bed, as well as its height from the floor to the top edge of the bedding. It is recommended that the bedspread hangs at a minimum of 40 cm on each side of the bed (except the headboard) and to a maximum of the ground level.

You might also consider if you want the bedspread to have an aesthetic “fold” at the headboard, which should take up about 40 additional centimetres.

Please note that in the case of a leg rest (elevated/built-up part at the legs) we do not calculate extra material to the front of the bed.

Example:

A bed of width 160 cm, length 200 cm and height from the floor 50 cm.
Recommended minimum bedspread size is width 240 cm (160+40+40) x 240 cm length (200+40).

If the bed had a built-up part at the legs - the bedspread would be 240 cm wide x 200 cm long.

If you want to have an aesthetic fold of the bedspread at the headboard, the size mentioned above should be increased accordingly by about 40 cm in length.

2. Bedspread inserted under the mattress:

The bedspread inserted under the mattress is a modern solution. By folding the edge of the bedspread under the mattress we highlight the bed frame and obtain an elegant look of the bedroom. Such an approach, however, requires dedicating more time to make the bed.

The bedspread to be inserted under the bed must have a dimension different from that placed on the bed. Moreover, you should, in this case, choose thin bedspreads that will be easier to bend. Otherwise, the bedspread may wrinkle.

Example:

Mattress of width 160 cm, length 200 cm, height 20 cm.
The minimum size of the bedspread is 240 cm width (160+20+20 and 20 cm each on both sides for the tuck underneath) and 240 cm length (200+20 and 20 cm for the tuck at the feet). If the bed had a built-up part at the legs - the minimum size of the bedspread would be 240x220 cm.

If you wish to have an aesthetic fold of the bedspread at the headboard, the size mentioned above should be increased by about 40 cm in length.
